The King Eddy Burger

“Why don’t we ever just go out for a burger?” he whined.

So we did. Last week. To the latest ByWard Market American-style diner for The King Eddy’s much touted hamburger. And you know, it was just the thing.

The Legendary King Eddy Burger is two patties “ground fresh daily, never frozen…” with (mild, I would say) cheddar cheese, ‘King Eddy sauce,’ ‘King Eddy relish,’ and a bunch of other toppings — lettuce, tomato, pickle, red onion, mustard, mayo, ketchup.

Toss in 50 cents or a buck more and your options open up (pickled jalapeno, corn relish, sautéed onions, mushrooms, bacon, fried egg or chili). Gluten free bun? Add a buck fifty. No bun, thanks? —Same price.

I had no idea what “absolutely no additives” (surely they add seasoning?) or “never frozen from a proprietary blend” (say what?) means. Regardless, I tucked in — juices and condiments dribbling down my arms — thinking that my guy was really on to something: sometimes you just want a burger. And not to have to think too much about it or find fault with it or suggest ways it might improve.

Well Ok. Just two things: had the cheddar been a bit more aged, it would have been tastier, and the sesame bun toasted would have been less prone to sogginess from all the goo inside.

Other than that, it was a very tasty burger. Almost full marks, says I. Fantastic says my man.
