THE GOOD, THE BRAD, AND THE ANXIETY
Brad Turcotte’s stage name is Brad Sucks — but he’s not so bad. Turcotte, a one-man band based out of Kemptville, plays danceable indie rock set to downer lyrics. The incongruity is delicious: there’s something a little odd about dancing your arse off to tunes about social anxiety — yet, somehow, Turcotte makes it work. Saturday, June 11. 9:30 p.m. $5. Elmdale Tavern, 1084 Wellington St. W. www.elmdaletavern.com
JUNIOR ACHIEVERS
Junior Boys — the dance floor-filling duo from Hamilton, Ontario (who, by association, give Steeltown a bit of glamour) are on the road again with the new album, It’s All True. The band brings their sympathizing synthesizer sounds to eastern Canada, before heading to the U.S. for a string of dates. Friday, June 10. 8 p.m. Maverick’s, 221 Rideau St. www.mavericksbar.com
FESTIVAL SEASON BEGINS
There is plenty to see and do at Westfest. Special mention goes out to Ottawa mod-pop group The Murder Plans who play dark rock with a certain vintage flair. They play Sunday, June 12 at 8 p.m. Catch them again later this summer at Bluesfest.
