Art-Is-In Bakery has been City Centre’s busiest success story for years — especially packed out at lunchtime and brunchtime, it’s perennially loud and frenetic, a place to people watch while enjoying some of the best baking in the city.
But this past spring, Beyond the Pale brewery finished a renovation that doubled the size of their taproom and gave them the space to install a kitchen and restaurant. In other words, City Centre regulars now have another food option.

The Smoque Shack crew runs the food side of the business, offering up menu items that pair well with brews — pulled meats, brisket, and burgers are the most popular menu choices. Classic pub apps include nachos, wings, and pretzels with BTP mustard. There’s also jackfruit on the menu for those who prefer their BBQ without meat.
As for beer, all the favourites are on the menu — IPAs, stouts, kolsches and, of course, the fuzzes.
The look
That gritty City Centre lots-of-concrete vibe is warmed up with oversized murals. Hang out at the bar or head to the back for a table and a view of the brewing operations. There’s also the patio option while the sun shines.
Find it: 250 City Centre, Unit 108
Hours: Monday to Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to midnight; Sunday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Hot Tip: Don’t go home empty-handed. The retail store generally has a dozen or so of BTP’s top sellers available by the can.
Hot Tip #2: Keep up on BTP events by following the brewery on Instagram or Facebook. We’re told the Yoga On Tap sessions (yoga and beer — what’s not to like?) are always well attended.
