FOOD BUZZ: Women chefs collaborate on creative charity dinners; first “Clam Jam” to be held at Union on Nov. 25

Last month we learned that a group of chefs in Ottawa had banded together under the moniker Knives Out Ottawa and launched a roving supper club concept inspired by Toronto’s Group of Seven — each dinner at a different restaurant and based on a new theme. The first one was held at Murray Street on Oct. 22 with the theme was pork.

The fact that all of the participating chefs in the new group were men was not lost on Sarah Allen, a chef at Union Local 613, who loved the idea of chefs’  collaborative dinners.

She quickly assembled her own culinary dream team with the cheeky name “Clam Jam.” (“The name started out as a joke, and it turns out a lot of people liked it. So we kept it,” wrote Allen in her press release.) The collaborators will host another series of special charity dinners. Here are the details that we have so far:

Who?
“Clam Jam” is a group of women chefs and cooks. Members include Sarah Allen (Union); Sarah Feagan (Union); Sonia Marwick (Union); Katie Brown Ardington (Beckta); Harriet Clunie (Navarra); Anna March (Urban Element); Marysol Foucault (Chez Edgar and Odile); Caroline Ishii (ZenKitchen); and Patricia Larkin (Black Cat Bistro).

What?
A 7-course meal for $90. There will be a cocktail and canape hour with a silent auction at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. The theme for this event is childhood. Each of these talented women will create a dish, and perhaps share a story about their own childhood.

When?
November 25. This is the national day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and all proceeds from the dinner and auction will go to Harmony House.

Where?
Union Local 613, 315 Somerset St. W. There are only 40 seats available. Reserve by calling Union at 613-231-1010.
