I’m still sad. Fuschian was, for me (perhaps for you too?) a favourite Vietnamese restaurant. Tom Trinh and Ãn Tran ran the place, with some family help, and the food was a distinct cut above. Perhaps they’ll resurface in another spot in the near future. In any event, I do wish them well and thank them for all the years of good eating.

Wei’s Noodle House is what’s moved in to this little space at 726 Somerset Street West.

My lunch here began with a boast: “Have you tried our spicy satay soup?” (Nope.) “Did you know the satay soup of our predecessor?” (You bet.) “Well, people are telling us ours is even better…”

If ever the gauntlet were thrown down on the linoleum, this seemed to be it. I simply had to order it.

The proud young guy who delivered the steaming bowl is the baby brother of Yu Wei — chef and owner, I understand. They’re a hard working couple of lads, and I wish I could just tell them their version of spicy satay soup was better than Fuschian’s. Truth is, that would take some serious soup to soup, slurp by slurp investigation. Most I’m prepared to admit is that it was possibly just as fine, plump with peanut flavour and with some serious bite. It was more than I could manage (one size: large) and cost not much.

I’ll be back to see if the balance of the menu is as fine.
