Maxwell’s on Elgin closing its doors

Maxwell’s, a mainstay of the Elgin Street scene for years, is closing its doors.

“After 30 years as a culinary and entertainment landmark in the city, the name and face of Maxwell’s is being retired,” said a notice posted on the restaurant’s website and Facebook page. “Our staff and management wish to extend our heartfelt appreciation for your years of patronage.”

Co-owner Patrick Cheang confirmed the post was true and said there are already plans in the works for the building.

“Pure Kitchen will be opening their downtown location on the main floor,” said Cheang. “And the upper level will be a new concept bar which has yet to be named.”

Vegetarians and vegans will no doubt celebrate the arrival of Pure Kitchen, the Richmond Road restaurant known for its vegan and organic fare.

Maxwell’s is just the latest restaurant to close in Ottawa’s ever-changing restaurant landscape. Raw Sugar Café, Mellos, and Hung Sum have all been shuttered recently. Hy’s Steakhouse is scheduled to close next month.
