Tonight! Gongfu Diner Takeover 2: Bao with a Vengeance

In spite of frigid temperatures, last February’s takeover was a massive success. That’s when fans of the Gongfu Bao cart (and, most especially, of owner Tarek Hassan’s fluffy steamed Chinese buns) descended on Vanier’s Fontenelle Restaurant (55 Montreal Rd.) for the first-ever Gongfu Bao takeover. On the menu that night? Three or four kinds of bao, noodle bowls, dumplings, and Hassan’s killer slaw. On that cold evening, patrons lined up around the block and the besieged bao makers actually ran out of food.

April 18 brings warmer weather and Gongfu Diner Takeover 2: Bao With a Vengeance. Hassan is promising to bring “a TON more” baos, bowls, and dumplings. The plan is for good eats, killer beats, and a kung fu movie or two over the course of the evening. Dinner runs 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. No reservations.

City Bites Hot Tip: Get there early, eat well, then walk off your dinner with a brisk stroll along the Rideau River through Riverain Park just five minutes west of The Fontenelle.
