The history
In 2008, a design-loving couple bought a lot in Greely and set about designing a dream home for their family of four. They teamed up with Maple Leaf Custom Homes to make it all come together in 2010. Homeowner Tatiana Wojtan, who has since gone on to lend her design skills to projects for outside clients, is now looking forward to designing her family’s second home on a two-acre lot just down the road at Rideau Forest in Manotick.

The place
This contemporary Greely bungalow is all about comfortable luxury, with smart details that make the most of the open spaces while ensuring the bedrooms are well separated from the main living area. The owners’ love for design is apparent in the thought given to layout, with private areas located at either end of the house (bedrooms at one end and a granny flat at the other). Wojtan bucked the trend of the modern house that’s all glass, all the time. Though there are ample windows, she designed her house to include a number of sweeping interior walls to showcase the family’s art collection.

The oversized front door opens into the zen calm of an open front hall, which is bright and welcoming — and also allows lots of room for removing jackets and boots:

The living room, which is open to the kitchen area and to the compact dining room, is light, bright, and with lots of room for seating. Art collectors will appreciate the large wall spaces designed to showcase art pieces:

The original kitchen had grey cabinetry, but Wojtan brightened up the room with glossy white cabinetry. The expansive island provides lots of workspace for keen home cooks:

Look at all that storage space! This is a kitchen that is easy to keep clean — there’s space to hide every kitchen gadget:

The compact dining room is perfect for family dinners and intimate gatherings. Again, Wojtan designed the room to provide ample wall space for artwork:

Roomy and serene, the master bedroom looks out over a very large (and very private) backyard:

Big selling point(s)
It’s a bungalow with style, a cool and comfortable family home with everything located on one level. The large lot is also a selling point, with room to play and lots of privacy.

Check out this kid’s room! So much space to make a mess in:

And another spacious kid’s room. No need for siblings to fight over who gets the big room and who gets the small one:

Cute extra — there’s a quiet nook hidden under the stairs to the basement. A perfect spot for kids to play or read:

Possible deal breaker
That crazy commute. Greely isn’t for the faint of heart commuter — it’s a 30-minute drive without traffic — and as the south end of the city gets increasingly built up the jams are only going to get worse in the near future.

By the numbers
2,900 square feet
0.5-acre lot
4 bedrooms (including a self-contained unit with a kitchenette)
