Light Fantastic! Cool fixtures aglow with possibility

Speak to lighting designers, and they will expound for hours on the properties of light — how it can be harsh or gentle, bold or subtle, skilfully used to infuse a space with a certain mood.

Decorators and interior designers have taken that passion for light and expanded it to the world of decorative fixtures, embracing an endless array of chic and sculptural pendants and chandeliers. Now the light maker is as glorious as that all-important glow it gives off.

Statement fixtures can illuminate a room while making a powerful statement about the owners’ sense of style. We’re in the midst of a lighting renaissance, aglow with possibilities, and these five fixtures showcase this luminous trend to beautiful advantage.

Tanya Collins of Tanya Collins Design dreamed up a custom hand-blown glass pendant chandelier for the dining room of this condo. Fabricated by creative lighting specialists AM Studio, the ethereal balls seem to hover like giant raindrops, picking up the watery blues and greys of the light streaming in through the dining room windows.

Astro Design worked its magic on this Alta Vista kitchen, teaming up with Tego and Campanale Homes on a kitchen whose visual centrepiece consists of two globe lanterns with burnished brass accents that play off the room’s sophisticated grey-and-white palette. Astro Design’s Nathan Kyle describes the look as “new-age modern meets old world.”

Designers from KISS Design, Sarah Kidder Design, and Krista Jadowski Designs collaborated on the decor for the 2017 Minto dream home, which was at the forefront of the glamorous-lighting trend. The “branches” of this custom iron chandelier hang from the vaulted ceiling, providing a captivating focal point and complementing the rustic-chic ambience of the master bedroom.

This award-winning renovation of a classic Glebe house by Amsted Design Build shows off the original ceiling medallion in the dining room to full advantage with an equally dramatic chandelier from Marchand Electric. The decision to paint the ceiling a deep raisin ensures that the medallion, crown moulding, and chandelier stand out.

Elegant and understated, this ensuite designed by StyleHaus Interiors is at once luxurious and comfortable. Central to the look is the Atom light fixture from Toronto’s Lightmaker Studio. Glass tiles with a warm metallic finish complement the showstopper light, as do nickel fixtures and a deep cherrywood trim. “You can mix metals if it’s done thoughtfully,” says StyleHaus’s Denise Hulaj.
