Sure, we’ve got all those great partying, poetry and performance art events in the Weekender, but here are a couple more kid-friendly Easter activities to keep the weekend rolling along.
Friday, April 22
The Easter Bunny at Valleyview Little Animal Farm has lost hundreds of Easter eggs and needs help to recover all of them during their Easter Weekend event. Gather the whole family for a weekend of scavenging, puppet shows, train tours, and many up-close encounters with an array of farm animals.
Get your matinee fix with a visit to the Mayfair Theatre to see Gnomeo and Juliet. This classic Shakespeare tale is retold in a world of warring garden gnomes who may or may not eventually realize the foolishness of their feud. A Braveheart-esque band of ceramic bunnies defy the passive and peaceful persona of the Easter Bunny — no other ornament can match their battling skills. Playing all weekend.
Saturday, April 23
The Annual Easter Market Day is back at North Gower Farmers’ Market with their farm- or home-fresh goodies. From plants and veggies to jewellery and wool products, there’s something for even the pickiest of market shoppers. And with an emphasis on inconspicuous gluten-free food, it’s an inclusive event for the whole family.
Explore conflicting perspectives of those who experienced the life and death of Christ at the Shenkman Arts Centre. Eyes Upon The Cross is a special event that tells the crucifixion story in a fresh way with a contemporary emphasis, through the eyes of close to 30 different characters. Also showing on Sunday.
Sunday, April 24
The adorable-cupcake extraordinaires at Thimblecakes are creating Easter-themed treats; yellow chicks, little bunnies, and lots of spring flowers adorn their baked goods this weekend. Happy to offer gluten free, vegan, and sugar free cakes, Thimblecakes is an experience for the entire family — traditional cakes are also available. Open Saturday and Sunday; closed Good Friday.
The Canadian Agriculture Museum presents Easter on the Farm. This weekend, celebrate spring’s arrival with soft little lambs, fuzzy new chicks, and silky baby rabbits. Make and sample delicious Easter breads, learn about the extraordinary complexity of the egg, and participate in an afternoon milking at the dairy barn. You won’t run out of things to do at this great weekend event. Also taking place Friday and Saturday.
Pick up the phone and book your seating for the Courtyard Restaurant’s Easter Brunch. An exquisite menu with a range of high-end dishes is the perfect alternative to cooking at home. For dessert, try their fresh fruit salad with aloe sorbet and crispy ginger or their rosemary and maple crème brulé with fresh berries. Set menu price at $28; children $14.
