There’s that familiar Ottawa sound in the music of the band ACRES. Those who’ve skulked around the bars and clubs of this city for the past decade or so might hear echoes of the Wooden Stars or Weights & Measures in the new sophomore album, A Gentle Reminder.
The trio that comprises Brian Ahopelto (drums), Matthew Corbiere (guitar, vocals) and Michael Zorn (bass) hosts a release for the new album this weekend.
As ACRES, the three musicians carry forth hallmarks of that Bytown-core sound (ponderous, achy, a little dreamy), adding a bit of gut-level passion in the form of a hazy torrent of reverb-drenched, propulsive guitar rock.
The album was recorded over four days in a 100-year-old lodge at Newboro Lake. The band and their engineer Dan Weston (Attack in Black, Classified, City and Colour), hauled their gear by road, boat, and foot to get to the mood-setting location.
The nine-song stunner is available on LP at independent retailers and via digital download from the band’s website. Friday, March 25. Maverick’s, 221 Rideau St. www.mavericksbar.com. With Glory Glory Man United and The Gallop.
