We’ve been excited about the colour block trend for months. We even had an editorial spread on the trend planned for the soon-to-be-published Ottawa Magazine Shopping Guide 2011-2012. But when we went out in search of items, we found a disconnect: sometimes colour blocking alluded to one garment with two or more blocks of vibrant colour; other times, trend-setters looking to rock the bold style simply paired bright separates.
Needless to say we were thrilled when stylist Alison Hughes invited us to her recently-updated shop, AMH Style, for a tutorial on the trend.
Like neon, colour blocking is a loud trend, Alison says, one that likely won’t live past this season. So if you’re going to buy that one outrageous piece with squares of orange and fuscia, make sure you get a lot of use out of it now, because it might look a little dated next summer.
Alison points out that, like any trend, everyone translates it in their own way. Those who prefer neutrals might pair a bright top with khakis; others will use the trend to play around with shocking pairings, using separates already in their wardrobe.
This is largely how Alison and her team at AMH Style see it. Last week, they dressed mannequins in various combos of yellow and cobalt for a completely cheerful, trendy, and doable look.
More tips from Alison:
— Look for Crayola brights. Think back to your Rainbow Brite days … and have fun!
— Take it easy on the accessories. If you’re already feeling overwhelmed, incorporate some natural fibres, via espadrilles or hemp jewellery. But if you’re up for it, you could add a new colour into the mix — again, think Crayola for a fun-loving look.
— Summer sun loves colour, and our summer is short. Jump on the chance to rock some brights this year!
