Let’s be honest: how much thought do we put into selecting flowers for a Mother’s Day gift? While the idea might be to honour our mothers, commercialism and the chaos of modern life has turned the celebration into another weekend errand.

So this week, Shop Talk is giving the holiday some much-needed respect with a few quick facts about the origin of the holiday. Did you know that the term Mother’s Day is trademarked? Furthermore, the founder, Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis of West Virginia, made clear when establishing the holiday that the apostrophe appears between the ‘r’ and the ‘s.’ It’s an important distinction, one which means we get to celebrate with our own mom (rather than pay homage at, say, the Mothers Monument in Washington, D.C. or one of the many other statues dedicated to mother figures.)

Back to brass tacks. If, like many others, honouring thy mother means picking up blooms, Bel Fiore is a fun, friendly place to do it.

The Look: Potted plants and punchy accessories; hand-tied bouquets

Perfect for: The trendy mom (or a mother who wants to feel on trend once in awhile)

USP: The shop also sells a number of unique collectibles, such as glass pitchers, teacups, and candlesticks
