Here at Shop Talk, we usually blab about shops and trends, observations and must-haves. But as we noted when we first expanded this blog, fashion events like Ottawa Fashion Week give us the chance to dress up a bit — which, in turn, give us a chance to talk about clothes, as we plan our outfits and dissect winning looks. So this week, we’re looking ahead to a few gigs sure to attract a fashionable crowd.
ANGIE’S MODEL AND TALENT SHOWCASE
The Scene: local fashion stalwart Angie’s AMTI hosts its annual runway show — but this time, the focus is on the models, not the clothes. Expect all eyes to be on sixteen-year-old supermodel Herieth Paul. She’s already been featured in New York Magazine, where she adorably espouses the merits of being a Canadian girl. Also in the aisles will be Paul Weber, the head of casting for MGM Studios in Los Angeles, and Al Onorato, the man who catapulted the likes of Katie Holmes, Jennifer Lopez, and Tyra Banks into the international spotlight
USP: Held in the grand-and-gritty Canadian War Museum, this event gives local talent a chance to shine — and then go to sleep in their own bed. And given the location, it’s also an opportunity for Ottawans to take pride in all the city has to offer.

I AM FASHION — RIP THE FAB LANE
The Scene: local model, designer, and activist Gwen Madiba is behind this new fundraiser. (Watch out for Gwen — she seems set to be both a community builder and a force in the fashion industry.) Billed as a “unique experience for those interested in the often neglected local fashion scene,” last year the event attracted Canadian supermodel/fashion industry icon Stacey McKenzie — a woman with an amazing story, who always turns heads. Now in its third year, I AM FASHION brings a fierce-meets-friendly vibe to the local fashion scene.
USP: the shows include a mix of local designers — including organizer Gwen Madiba’s own line, FrAsh Femme Jewelry Design by Isobel Walker, and Montreal’s Anomal Couture — and worldwide brands like MEXX, which means the runways reflect what’s really in our closets.

STROKED EGO’S SUMMER LAUNCH: PUMP Underwear show
The scene: Schmooze with a less modest crowd at Ottawa’s urban male emporium, Stroked Ego, at the exclusive presentation of the summer collection of PUMP Underwear. Whether you fancy the bright tartan or enjoy the more traditional, classic tighty whities, you will be able to find something to suit your man!
USP: stare at a hunk’s crotch and not be called a perv! But seriously: take advantage of the current trend towards colour in menswear and get a pair! Of underwear, of course.

RAVENSWING: Ottawa’s Craft & Zine Fair
The scene: area crafters come together to showcase their goods in a beautiful setting — Minto Park on Elgin Street. Live local bands will be on site to serenade shoppers as they explore the artistic offerings. Crafting workshops is also on the agenda; this year’s focus is on creating jewellery from recycled fabrics.
USP: 60% of each vendor’s stock is priced at $20 or less!
At the door: well, there is no door (unless it rains), which means no cover, making this a perfect event to schedule around lunch, brunch, or a simple walk in the park.
